FIFA president wants 48 participants in World Cup football

FIFA may want to organize a World Football Championship in which no fewer than 48 countries will participate. President Gianni Infantino has had this idea in mind for some time and has now proposed it in a meeting of the football association in Bogota, Colombia.

Infantino has already indicated that he will increase the number of countries participating in the World Cup. wants to increase from 32 to 40 countries. The number of countries at the 2018 and 2022 World Cup has already been set at 32 countries.

If 48 countries play in the main tournament, there will be a preliminary round in which 32 countries will play in one knockout competition for 16 places. These 16 winners then join the 16 already qualified countries in the group round.

FIFA is currently considering this proposal to slightly change the structure of the World Cup. The union will make a final choice at the beginning of 2017. Since the World Cup 2018 and the World Cup 2022 have already been allocated, the World Cup in 2026 will be played with 48 participants for the first time.
